
Alex Chien, a freshman at Princeton University, is the winner of many international piano competitions. He won first prize in the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, first prize in the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition and first prize and the "Most Promising Young Talent" special award in the 9th International Russian Piano Competition's Young Musician category. He also won top prizes in the Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition, in the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition and in the 56th Annual Jefferson International Young Artists Competition. Alex is a member of the AYE trio that won the first place prize in the Galante Award and the second place prize in the Enkor International Chamber Competition.
At the state and national levels, Alex is the winner of first prize and grand prize in senior and junior division of the Mondavi Young Artist Competitions, winner of first place awards in the Marilyn Mindell Piano Competitions and winner of two first prizes in the Marian Filice Piano Competitions. He also won first prizes in the San Francisco Young Pianists' Competition, the Pacific Music Society Annual Competition, the Henry and Carol Zeiter Piano Competition, and the Sylvia M. Ghiglieri Piano Competition. He was the winner of the 27th Celia Mendez Young Pianist's Beethoven Competition, the Menuhin-Dowling Young Musicians Award and the Bouchaine Young Artists Award. In addition, Alex has won first place multiple times in the US Open Music Competitions, in the Chinese Music Teachers' Association of North California Youth Music Competitions, and in competitions sponsored by the Music Teachers' Association of California.
Alex has performed with many symphony orchestras as the winner of concerto competitions such as the Palo Alto Philharmonic's Concerto Movement Competition, the Marilyn Mindell Piano Competition by the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra, the Young Artist Competition by the Diablo Symphony Orchestra, the Fremont Symphony's Young Artist Competition and the competition sponsored by the Temple Hill Symphony Orchestra.
Alex has performed in many countries. He has given multiple solo recitals across the US and England. Other performances outside the US include an engagement with the California Youth Symphony Orchestra in six major cities of Argentina and Uruguay in 2010 and a performance with the Newcastle Sinfonietta in Newcastle, England. In the US, Alex has performed in many musical festivals, special events and fund-raising concerts. He also regularly shares his music in his community service to elementary schools and elderly communities around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Alex has been studying piano with Kai Chi Zhu since he was 4 years old. He is also under the tutelage of Mack McCray. Alex has benefited from lessons with other great pianists such as Leon Fleischer, Leslie Howard, Jerome Lowenthal, Gabriel Chodos, Ruth Slenczynska, Hung-Kuan Chen, Mordecai Shehori and Tai-Chang Chen. Alex has been in master classes with Lang Lang, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, and Jon Nakamatsu.
